Just turn up Please meet us at Halton Mill and we will take you to one of our homes.

Please come to have a look round and experience the comfort of one of our 41 Passivhaus homes, and meet and chat with the resident.

Each home in the Lancaster Cohousing Project at Forgebank has the following features;

PassivHaus

PassivHaus design dramatically reduces the need for space heating and can reduce heating bills by 90% compared with conventional homes. It achieves this through south facing aspect and very high levels of insulation, airtightness and mechanical ventilation and heat recovery (MVHR).

Electricity supply

Forge Bank is connected to the community microgrid and each home will have a meter. Power from a 160kW hydro-electric scheme (being developed in conjunction with Halton community) will soon be available, along with power from photovoltaic solar panels mounted on the most appropriate roofs.

Sustainable community

We are thinking beyond the buildings in terms of environmental impacts. For example, we have a car share scheme and organic vegetable deliveries. Shared facilities mean that some things, from washing machines to lawnmowers, do not need to be owned by every household. In all, our intention is for a neighbourhood where it is very easy to live a sustainable lifestyle.

District Heating

The homes and hot water are heated by a district heating system. This has a 5000 litre storage vessel heated by a 40kW solar thermal array and a 150kW boiler fuelled by local wood chip.

Please see our separate listing for details of an opportunity to have a tour of the whole site from someone who is familiar with the technical details.
