Ange and her partner live an energy efficient life on their narrow boat with their two young children.  Living in such a constricted area inevitably reduces your energy and other resources use - there’s not much space to heat or to put lots of stuff.  They’ve also consciously tried to make their boat as energy efficient as possible.  Their solar PV panels supply all their electricity between March and October: at other times they occasionally need to supplement them by running the engine. Low energy LED lighting helps by reducing demand.  The central heating is gravity fed from the back boiler of their wood burning stove.  Fuel for cooking comes from a small gas cylinder. For ten years they had a grass roof, which encourages biodiversity and provides insulation, and are in the process of replacing it with a sedum roof - they are sorry that it’s not done yet but do ask them about it.

If you’d like to experience this lifestyle for a few days, you could take a holiday on 'Snail's Pace, the 4 person narrowboat that Ange and her partner rent out on the Lancaster canal. http://www.snailspacenarrowboatholidays.com/

Ange’s home is moored on the towpath, north of the Hest Bank Inn, which is at 2 Hest Bank Lane, Hest Bank, Lancashire, LA1 6DN
